In BC, water usage and wasting is becoming more and more important of an issue. I think that a great way to help us maintain our water resources for the longer run is to make use of greywater: excess water from showers, bathtubs, sinks, and washing machines. Basically, we can reuse this water for toilets and irrigation, and save up to 50% of water used in a household... which makes for a lot more water for the future!

My idea is to develop a program called UVic Ride share. It is carpooling program set up specifically for UVic commuters. By setting up a simple website, the program would match up students and other commuters based on their daily schedule. UVic Rideshare would work with the universities parking services to get a reduced parking pass for members and reserved preferred parking spots by different building around campus. This program would decrease gas emissions and the amount of cars on the road. It would also increase social networking and defend campus green space from additional parking lots.

There are some cases where it is consumed by humans such as during space missions. Based on the principle that we are being taught at school of overcycling (which means extending somethings useful life by changing its context and use) in Mexico i just wanted to show a little something me and a team of other 3 people made during the week of architecture from Universidad Iberoamericana. Winning second place im going to show what 4 people, a few days and a bunch of plastic bottles can do.

These bottles could very well be bricks for construction, just fill em up with trash and voila.

Te team's name was "Usted esta aqui" which means "You are here" in spanish.

In the beginning of the video, we showed the consequences of throwing away and wasting paper - a future without trees. Later, we came up with an idea of using hand towels, instead of paper towels, after washing our hands. This way, we will be able to save all the paper that is wasted for drying our hands.

Basically our goal was to create a short video in which a burglar (Harrison Edwards) breaks into a house and attempts to switch out a non-energy efficient light bulb for a more energy efficient one. In audition to that we tried to create a storyline within' a limited time frame which includes two friends (Dan Tran, Davor Dugonjic) coming back from a movie and finding the front door wide open, and then calling the police and lastly entering the house and observing what had been done.

Sustainability? That is the question...

Kids these days are always slouching because of heavy backpacks, thanks to 5-pound textbooks. It takes up room in your locker, bedroom, kitchen table, and basically all over your house. Instead of having that huge text book on the table crowding your desk space and making your backpack weigh an extra 5 pounds, why not have all textbooks changed into a USB. Some bibles, and textbooks are already on USB’s and online, so why not make all school text books in that format?

When we went to South Korea, we realized that all fast food restaurants had different bins for different items, like garbage, plastics, liquids, and cups. This way, they can recycle the plastic and cups, and just throw away the garbage. This idea is extremely beneficial because of how many people go to fast food restaurants, and is feasible as well.

Our idea for the conservation of energy is a large scaled water tank set outside of every school in BC to reduce the roles of dams and their costs. The tank would contain the rain and produce clean drinking water for schools. It would be more accessible and quick to reach. It would also create a secondary energy which is electricity, The water tank would connect to a generator that will rotate. The rotation would create mechanical energy.

The basic idea I'm trying to get across here is that since Science has proven that energy can only be transformed (not created or destroyed) why not put a generator on each axle of a car with a rechargeable battery connected to it. Then the kinetic energy created by the wheels spinning could be converted to electric energy and stored in the battery. When you get home you plug the battery into a larger battery and store the energy at home. Then the electricity is transferred, through the same cables that bring electricity to your house, back to the power company, and at the end of the month the amount you pay for your power bill is reduced by however much energy you send back to the power company.

Textbooks have always been a part of schools but printing them on paper just doesn’t make sense anymore. Because schools are moving more and more to computer based learning, why not have textbooks online too. Many students use the internet everyday and computers cost so little. That would make integrating it into a school setting very easy. The possibilities are endless!

Installing trash compactors rather than standalone garbage bins would reduce how often garbage needs to be transportated while at the same time lessening the amount of spillage and overflow of waste. Centralizing the compactors between adjacent areas can further reduce the travel times of garbage trucks, and implementing compactors to run on such things as solar energy would only expand their helpful impact.
