An essay on changes in the way we do things
By Stana Ludmillin
Grade 12 Elgin Park Student

Sustainability, a big word with a big meaning. I am always learning about what is means to lead a sustainable life. About 2 years ago, I’d be the girl that would throw plastic bottles into the garbage, along with paper products as well. In grocery store lineups, I would always buy three or four plastic bags and actually laugh at those who brought their own bags, while thinking to myself “who pays five dollars for those enviro-friendly bags?!” When I would hear people ‘Going-Green’ I’d think it was the most ridiculous thing I heard, and that anyone going green was literally a tree-hugging hippie.
I never thought that my actions would possibly make such a big and bad impact on the environment. After being enlightened from watching movies like an Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore, I realized we all need to change the way we look at the world and the way we do things. We have one Earth and we need to treat it as a precious gift. Our actions can make a positive difference in our environment. At my school, I am part of the Business Executive Club, of which I am senior Marketing Executive. As part of my role I worked with my teacher, Mr.Mundi to change the way our school does things. I realized we could deliver messages through electronic newsletter created by students for students. As part of being sustainable, we decided to not print any copies and only post the magazine for students to read online. Attached is our 2nd issue. This issue is our November Sustainability issue and includes tips we share with our school community on how they can also lead sustainable lives.

Thankyou for reading my entry,

Stana

In BC, water usage and wasting is becoming more and more important of an issue. I think that a great way to help us maintain our water resources for the longer run is to make use of greywater: excess water from showers, bathtubs, sinks, and washing machines. Basically, we can reuse this water for toilets and irrigation, and save up to 50% of water used in a household... which makes for a lot more water for the future! http://www.inventthefuture.ca/video126 Sun, 08 Nov 2009 02:04:41 -0500 Father and Sun The D44 Video Team's idea for the contest to invest on a wide scale in Thin Film Solar panels. UVic Rideshare My idea is to develop a program called UVic Ride share. It is carpooling program set up specifically for UVic commuters. By setting up a simple website, the program would match up students and other commuters based on their daily schedule. UVic Rideshare would work with the universities parking services to get a reduced parking pass for members and reserved preferred parking spots by different building around campus. This program would decrease gas emissions and the amount of cars on the road. Think Outside the Bottle Bottled water has a much bigger impact on the environment than most people think. Why would anyone want to spend money and destroy the planet at the same time? Our idea involves a way to eliminate the use of bottled water (specifically in B.C) that is convenient and easy. We, (In Canada) have some of the cleanest tap water in the wold..so why not take advantage of it.

Energy Creation for the Markets of Tommorow Let's face it, the world is changing and in many ways we can see how. The rest of the world is just beginning to invest in some more of the mundane power sources, pulling at least out of coal and into nuclear power (no better but at least those contaminates can be easily contained and are not vast and in filterable.) However, we face another type of pollution that. of eliminated could in turn lead us to an energy source of it’s own!

So, unlike the latter of the world, why not invest on the ground floor of a new kind of technology that could bring revolutions tomorrow. First let me bring up the subject of cell phones causing cancer. What might this have to do with a new source of energy you may ask? It would turn out that the cell phones emit a radiation that causes damage. While the medical rudimentary processes of how this works are beyond me, I find it quite clear that if there is a emission of electricity from such devices there must be a way to conduct it, and there for collect and recycle it. As strange of an idea it is, it is perhaps something to think of, or tinker with. Just an idea, I suppose seeing as how it is damaging to our health, and if eliminated could increase the quality of living and produce energy at a staggering rate.

Just a thought,

It would also create a secondary energy which is electricity, The water tank would connect to a generator that will rotate. The rotation would create mechanical energy.

Sustainability starts with everyday items By replacing the usual opaque metal fridge door with a transparent door, huge amounts of energy could easily be saved. Due to the reduced amount of time the fridge door ould be open, much less energy would be wasted by leaving the door open. Being able to see what you want without having to open the door would also make life easier and more efficient. http://www.inventthefuture.ca/essay105 Wed, 28 Oct 2009 15:32:16 -0400 THINK a few simple ideas that can lead to a better future, things that anyone can do http://www.inventthefuture.ca/essay104 Wed, 28 Oct 2009 13:09:59 -0400 Save the Polar Bears! A heat exchanger would use the thermal energy of the outgoing water to heat the incoming water. If we were to install heat exchange system in the piping of residences, we could save substantial amounts of home heating costs. In fact, the average BC household consumes 18% of its energy heating water. Kinetic Energy Converter The basic idea I'm trying to get across here is that since Science has proven that energy can only be transformed (not created or destroyed) why not put a generator on each axle of a car with a rechargeable battery connected to it. Then the kinetic energy created by the wheels spinning could be converted to electric energy and stored in the battery. When you get home you plug the battery into a larger battery and store the energy at home. Then the electricity is transferred, through the same cables that bring electricity to your house, back to the power company, and at the end of the month the amount you pay for your power bill is reduced by however much energy you send back to the power company. http://www.inventthefuture.ca/video51 Sun, 25 Oct 2009 13:52:17 -0400 you can be the change Hi my name is Adam, and I am applying for this award because I would
like to help make a difference, and to be able to teach others on how
they can help our planet.

Have you ever really sat down and considered the amount of energy you
use each and every day? Would you be comfortable revealing this figure
to an environmentalist? I decided I might be a little bit surprised
with my own results so I tried to determine just how much energy I may
consume on a daily basis. I started by looking around me at the energy
I was currently using. What I found was an excessive amount of
unnecessary waste occurring right in my own house,

Conservation of energy also has another meaning and that is to ‘save’
energy. As the natural energy sources become harder to find, it is
important to learn how to save energy. One way of doing this is to
create an energy efficient home. To create an energy efficient home
there are many measures that can be taken to save energy, they
include: solar energy, as the sun is a constant natural energy
resource we can store that energy and use it to heat out water. ‘Sleep
mode’ on computers, computers are definitely becoming more and more
popular in homes, if and only if the computer needs to be on at all
times you should use the sleep mode which lets the computer run on the
minimum amount if energy needed. Last but not least, energy can be
conserved by doing the simple things around the home to lessen the
usage of the machines that do work: example, turning applications off
at the power point instead of just at the switch on the appliance and
shutting all windows and doors and closing all curtains to keep the
heat in the house instead of relying on the heater to do all the work,
and vise-versa in the summer, to open all the windows and doors to let
the cool air in instead of relying on the air conditioner.

Some ways that I have done to help save energy is used recycled items
for projects, like i made a wall-e statue out of recycled car parts,
made recycled art projects. If i can't finish my drinking water
instead of throwing the rest down the drain, I would give the rest to
the plants because they can use it. At home and at work i check to
make sure that lights that aren't being used have been turned off and
make sure that outlets that aren't being used have no plugs in them.
In the winter I wear lots of layers to keep warm, and shut the door to
keep the heat in my rooms. That way i don't have to turn the heater
on. I don't watch a lot of t.v. nor do i play a lot with my video
games. I mostly have the video games for collection. I like to play
card games and ride my bike and play guitar and piano during my spare
time. I also do kayaking and other outdoor sports. When i was in
europe my parents wanted to get a t.v. I choose an energy saving t.v.
I don't like to throw things away that i know that somebody else an
have use for them. I like to donate things to thrift stores. At the
compost center I learned how turning horse poo into fuel and compost.
I'm not sure if we have this in victoria b.c. but with the forest that
have been cut down and the tree trunks left there, we can make use of
that space for a meadow with energy windmills.

At school's we could have an energy saving contests, wich will help
students learn about ways they can energy save in there school and at
home. Students can each month have 2 kids from each class room going
around checking other class rooms to see how much energy they are
saving, and can see how much the school itself is saving energy.

Ways you can save energy:
Turn the lights off when not needed
Go green
Have an energy saving home (solar powered roof)
Learning about energy saving in schools
Recycled bottles can be used for floors
Don't have the stereo and hairdryer and etc. plugged in when your not
using them all, use one at a time
Turn the water off when you brush your teeth, using soap to wash you hands
Don't leave the fridge door open and don't leave the stove open to "cool off"
Don't throw away things that can be recycled
Don't stay home a lot to play video games and watch t.v.

You can be active and help your world by going out in the community
and help clean up parks and recycle. You can make really cool projects
with recycled items

It is important for all people to realize the need for conserving
energy. It is impossible for all the natural resources to keep up with
our forever advancing civilization, and supply us with the energy that
we need.

A Changing World Textbooks have always been a part of schools but printing them on paper just doesn’t make sense anymore. Because schools are moving more and more to computer based learning, why not have textbooks online too. Many students use the internet everyday and computers cost so little. That would make integrating it into a school setting very easy. The possibilities are endless!

Actions such as switching the lights out to inventing hybrid vehicles really DO help our planet's environmental state. Replace and Restrain My idea is to replace laundry dryers for half of the year every year. It's has a lot of logic and It could surely make a difference. http://www.inventthefuture.ca/essay47 Sun, 04 Oct 2009 12:42:13 -0400 fitness clubs that generates electricity Dear Reader,
it might be a stupid idea...like the fact I'm charging my kids 1$ every time I find the light ON in the middle of the day, but this is the one from a long list I keep safe in my inventions drawer. BTW, some years ago I was member of the Romanian Inventors Association.

Every time I go to the Gym, I see that they use huge amounts of electricity: the air conditioner (kilowatts), at least 30x2 neon tube lights, the heating system in the winter, the pool, then those treadmills and other equipment, each one has a motor of at least 400w. If you look at their power consumption, you might say that they are one of your good customers. The same with big manufacturers, the cities with their lighting system left ON in the daytime, and others, just few from my long list of energy offenders. Everything humans do, consumes energy, I'm thinking to move in a cave just before retirement...
If you offer discounts to those who are installing systems that saves the energy, in amounts that would convince them that they actually save money implementing such system, even on the long run (to those to show you an action plan and real results), you might see results.
If you are still reading, immagine a Gym club, like Fitness 2000 that have some generators installed on their equipment. The energy produced by the human workout (those people have to eat in order to burn those calories, so we consume energy by over-eating, then we drive our cars, which cause another pollution, to the club, where we are trying to get rid of that extra weight, so another way to waste energy, and that just because we are a nation of people who live for eating...
You might consider me some weirdo, but if you think about that amount of food they waste (they eat it then they want to get rid of it, while bilons are sufering of hunger), that food requires some energy to be produced, not only the heating/cooking, but the ingredients have a long history of energy consumption, like the workers at the farm, the workers who have a job in the fertilizers plant, and so on.
Conclusion: some generators that can charge a battery system, a system that can pump back some electricity into BC Hydro system in the night-time.
I don't write for money.
