In order to conserve energy, the most important thing is attitude on all levels: individuals, communities, schools, and governments. It will require cooperation and a "paradigm shift" of the way we look at things, but this is the way to stop the impending environmental disasters. We must change our lifestyles.
One of the ways in which this can manifest itself is through changing the energy infrastructure so that many households are essentially independent of a grid. Housesholds that can, can install solar panels, windmills, geothermal systems, and other energy systems to generate their own energy. Those that can't generate enough can be supplied by excess from other households or be backed up by a system (which might involve nuclear energy).
