The Gulf Islands Film and Television School (GIFTS)

In the spring of '95 GIFTS was little more than a dream taking root in the remains of a once active logging camp on beautiful Galiano Island, BC. Today it's the creative epicentre of North America's emerging media makers and Canada's most award-winning film school! GIFTS has trained over 4000 students (teens, adults, and teachers) who have together created over 1700 original student films!

GIFTS alumni have made their mark in the world of activist-orientated independent media. As Canada's renowned "Indie Film School," GIFTS takes pride in offering an annual Activist Media Intensive Training Program each spring to arm members of the environmental movement with valuable video production skills.

Not your average school, GIFTS practices learning by doing and boasts an incredible faculty of award-winning media professionals who top the environmental/social documentary movement such as Velcrow Ripper, Jennifer Abbott, Nettie Wild, Heather Frise, Diana Wilson, and Leanne Allison, among others.

Working with BC Hydro to produce Invent the Future is an obvious fit for GIFTS. Environmentally conscious projects that tackle issues such as climate change and energy conservation have been at the forefront of their student productions for over a decade now. They have worked closely on projects with leading green organizations such as the Sierra Club of Canada and Environment Canada to produce environmental films and public service announcements concerning climate change that have gone on to win international awards and receive national television broadcast time. In 2007, GIFTS partnered with BC Hydro to launch the Off The Grid Video Contest, in which students from across BC participated in an online video contest competing for their chance to attend a course at GIFTS to produce energy conservation videos. These videos are now being featured at festivals across North America!

GIFTS is proud to once again join BC Hydro in launching another groundbreaking contest promoting environmental awareness and energy conservation solutions across British Columbia!
